Discover the functions of 5G technology and the advantages of contracting it

The recent arrival of 5G technology in Spain has meant a revolution in the telecommunications system in the national territory. The entry of this fifth generation of connection to the network allows you to navigate on your smartphone at breakneck speed, almost equal to that of your home or work computers.

What is 5G technology?

5G means taking another step in the evolution of mobile generations, specifically 4G, allowing Internet speeds up to 100 times faster than its predecessor.

Its acronym responds to the fifth generation of Internet connection technologies that use devices such as smartphones to connect to the network from anywhere and at any time.

The implementation of 5G technology comes from an evolutionary process in the telecommunications system: from 2G, which only allowed sending SMS, to the entry of 3G and consequently the arrival of the Internet on devices or 4G, which already allowed watching videos thanks to broadband.

What are the differences between 4G technology and 5G technology?

Among the main differences between 5G and 4G are:

  • Data speed: it goes from 1 GPS to 10 GPS, figures higher than those currently offered by fibre optics.
  • Latency reduction, that is, the reaction time from when an order is given to the network until the device responds. It goes from 80-100 milliseconds with 4G to 10 milliseconds with 5G, almost in real-time.
  • Connecting multiple devices at the same time, such as refrigerators, cameras, or cars

What advantages does 5G technology offer?

The aforementioned first advantage of 5G is the improvement in performance thanks to the great increase in speed. Downloading HD movies with this generation will be reduced to seconds, fueling not only personal digitization but also business innovation. Other advantages are:

  • Coverage: 4G connection problems in some parts of the Iberian Peninsula and the fact of not having data in large crowds of people (a concert, for example) are eliminated with 5G. This type of connection extends infrastructures so that a greater number of devices can be connected at the same time.
  • Energy efficiency: The fact that one million devices per square meter can be connected to the network instead of 10,000 with the old technology encourages a determined commitment to smart cities and automatic cars, the so-called Internet of Things.
  • Battery saving, since it requires 90% less energy than 3G or 4G.
  • Promotion of virtual networks or also called network slicing, which allows specific characteristics and properties to be given to each part of the network.

When did 5G technology arrive in Spain?

It was estimated that it would be in 2020 when Spanish users could enjoy the properties of 5G in Spain, but Vodafone wanted to go ahead to offer an Internet connection with this type of technology from mid-June.

The company has deployed 5G in Spain with the Huawei network (and a small contribution from Ericsson), but it is only compatible with three phones that are not owned by this manufacturer: Samsung Galaxy S10 5G, LG V50 ThinQ5G and Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 5G.

In addition, commercial 5G technology services are available in the following 15 cities: Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Málaga, Zaragoza, Bilbao, Vitoria, San Sebastián, La Coruña, Vigo, Gijón, Pamplona, Logrono, and Santander.
