Thinking about contours can lead us to reflect on limits, optical frontiers; questioning materialism and rationalism, doubting the possibility of delimiting objects or parts: in short, defining what is material. Curves in elements that remind us of some travelled paths, or paths that are made between letters. Imagining curves that are both paths and their cartographic representation on the map of this first blank sheet.
Yes, the curves provide, on the one hand, sensuality, beauty and even tranquillity. The curve at the end provides calm. And this visual chimera becomes a reality in the work of the Spanish artist Fernando García, with the artistic surname Aggaro, father and founder of Aggaro Functional Art. In his work he evidences a series of sculptures with which he transgresses one of the taboos of the work of art: its functionality.
The story of the artist Fernando Aggaro
To achieve this result, the artist born in Madrid dedicated part of his life to working as a Civil Engineer, and through his experience in the design and execution of civil engineering works, as well as in the aesthetics of bridges, he came to in contact with various materials that influenced his creative process and harmonized the nature of his designs.
That passion for art and his work as a civil engineer came together a few years ago, when he glimpsed that those millimetric drawings with their own deadlines could become something more than an exercise in mental relaxation. As a culmination to that artistic essence that he forged with years of work and inspiration, he created Aggaro Functional Art at the end of 2010, where he materialized those principles through sculptural works that he endowed with functionality, this being his leitmotif.
The love for the curve characterizes Aggaro's work, but before that it was the hallmark of Modernism in Spain and Art Nouveau in France and Belgium, and it must be said that we are dealing with works that we could describe as neo-modernist. “I would say it is the search for calm in space. Very sharp edges create tension. There is already too much stress in everyday life, which we all accumulate.
What is intended is that a certain space be more vital, more habitable, that you have that space of recollection, of tranquillity, that gives you apart from tranquillity a place of disconnection from the harshness of everyday reality”, reflects Ferdinand.
Aggaro is concept rather than a brand
Aggaro thinks of everything: in the bookcase that will house your most precious literary friends, the exclusive coat rack that will give a nice touch to that corner that for no reason seemed empty, or the elegant table with sumptuous curves; a priori, sculpture and comfort do not seem to go hand in hand, “that's where engineering comes in, the fusion between technique and art. You have to work on the materials, the mechanics, the stability and the ergonomics so that a chair, for example, surrounds you, welcomes you. I always try to find the limit of the material. If it can be done in 4 mm thickness, I don't do it in 5 mm, I look for the maximum slenderness of the pieces”.
Geometric figures, square or circular patterns, asymmetric shapes with wood, steel, stone or leather, which together with the transparency of the glass, harmonize and highlight each other; and an extravagant point in the frantic and successful attempt to escape from rigidity and corseted patterns.
Aggaro Design is more of a concept than a brand. The artist has masterfully fused his deep knowledge of physics and mathematics, learned in his years as an engineer, with his passion for art. The years that Fernando García has spent among the avant-garde bridge designs in Spain and Portugal are now applied to the design of unique artisan works.
The neutral tones of his creations reinforce the background sea of timelessness and the constant of geometry. “In the end, everything that is built is a geometric figure”, with an aesthetic charge in this case. “When I go to an exhibition I enjoy it, and that's how this started. Trying to transfer art to your home, to your surroundings, to your day-to-day life, also in the armchair where you are sitting”.
Trust is a creative art
Only a civil engineer, fascinated by the beauty of bridges, may be the only one capable of building one over the void that separates sculpture from utility. Confidence in oneself and in the other, in one's own ideas and those of others, in what he sees and in what he intuits, in what he infers from what happened and in what he will never see...
Trust is an art and it is, at least in the case at hand, a creative art. And so, at his own pace and his ideas, commanding his creativity and self-confidence, Fernando Aggaro advances towards a beautiful and functional future to which he arrives carrying in his hands the best of what was and will be.
